13 Common Questions About CBD Oil

By Jared Kaufman

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, as it is more commonly referred to is a compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. Over the past several years, this compound has made a huge impact on individual’s health and wellness. Thanks to recent research we now know that CBD has a wide variety of health benefits and can potentially help manage and mitigate a multitude of medical conditions.  It is usually found in oil form.

Is CBD safe?

CBD from a reputable brand is safe to use. While CBD is generally considered free from side effects some can exist.  The most common side effects are typically caused by ingesting too much CBD oil and include; drowsiness, nausea, and diarrhea. Similar to any supplement or medication you should always consult a physician prior to use.

Is CBD Legal?

It can depend on who you ask and how your CBD oil is derived.  So much of CBD regulation is tied to marijuana legislation. If you live within a state where marijuana is legal either recreationally or medicinally then you should have nothing to worry about.  The laws are changing fairly quickly and with CBD’s ease of availability online the lack of regulations for the non-psychoactive compound leaves it in a bit of a gray area.

If I Take CBD Will I Fail A Drug Test?

If you may be subjected to a drug test you’re encouraged to exercise caution when taking CBD oil. Some CBD oils especially full spectrum CBD oils may have higher trace amounts of THC, that may cause you to fail a drug test even if you don’t experience a high. Most drug tests are not geared toward identifying CBD.

Does CBD interact with other medications?

CBD inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is involved in metabolization of many drugs. Similar compounds exist in grapefruit that inhibit the same enzyme group. This is why physicians advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking a medication. By inhibiting cytochrome P450, CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs.  Even though CBD is generally thought of to be safe it is always recommended to consult your physician prior to starting or stopping any new supplements or medication.

How do I know what dose of CBD I should take?

CBD dosing is not a one-size-fits-all method.  Everyone’s body metabolizes CBD differently so it is recommended to start with a small dose.  Most CBD products have a recommended serving size on the label. It’s recommended to follow the products instructions and perhaps be even more conservative when just starting out.

Will CBD Get Me High?

This is the most common question people ask about CBD. CBD alone does not contain any psychoactive component that is associated with marijuana or THC. Therefore, you will not get the feeling of being intoxicated from CBD oil. Most hemp used in the making of CBD oil has a maximum of 0.3 percent THC to produce 99 percent pure CBD.

How Do I Take CBD?

The most common form of CBD is in oil form, however, CBD isolate is a powder or crystal. CBD has been added to so many products there are a variety to choose from.

The most common forms of CBD:

  • Tincture (Sublingual oil drops)
